What is Vision Therapy?

Vision Therapy is a rehabilitative program prescribed to treat developmentally and/or neurologically induced dysfunctions of the visual system. The American Optometric Association defines Vision Therapy as a sequence of neurosensory and neuromuscular activities individually prescribed and monitored by a doctor to develop, rehabilitate, and enhance visual skills and processing.

At Vision Development Center of NJ, our patients experience a personalized treatment approach. Depending on the type of problem found sometimes glasses can help. If glasses won't solve the vision problem, Vision Therapy may be recommended. If indicated, the doctor will prescribe an individualized treatment program of Optometric Vision Therapy.

Each Vision Therapy session is conducted one-on-one, under the doctor's supervision. During treatment, we apply state-of-the-art technology and procedures, making treatment productive and enjoyable. Our advanced approach incorporates coordinated movement, balance, auditory processing, and cognitive abilities allowing our patients to develop their visual abilities and improve daily living in the classroom, in sports, and in the workplace.

What Equipment is Used in Vision Therapy?

Just as a physical therapist might use treadmills or weights, a vision therapist uses hi-tech equipment, including prisms, lenses, filters, computerized systems, as well as a variety of other specialized equipment to conduct Vision Therapy sessions.

In our office, we use many interactive computer programs that our younger patients enjoy and that result in long-lasting success.

Not only do the programs offer a proven, more effective method of delivering therapy, but the "fun" nature of the programs keeps the patient motivated to work, and we find that results come quicker and stronger for our patients.

How Long is a Vision Therapy Program?

The number of office visits required depends on the diagnosis, age, and goals of the patient. Vision Therapy programs typically involve one to two in-office sessions each week, for a varying number of months depending on the treatment plan. We prescribe home exercises to reinforce office therapy. The scope of the treatment plan will be fully explained during your consultation.
